CELI 2 • Level B1
What’s CELI 2?
CELI 2 (Level B1) is an official language certification recognized by the Italian Ministry of the Interior as a valid qualification for obtaining Italian citizenship through marriage. The Certificato di Conoscenza della Lingua Italiana (Certificate of Knowledge of Italian Language), or CELI is issued by the University for Foreigners of Perugia and takes place on the same dates 3 times a year worldwide: in March, June and November.
CELI exams can only be administered by an authorized institution on behalf of the Università per Stranieri di Perugia. In California, the official examination center is the Istituto Italiano di Cultura di San Francisco. The CELI 2 examination comprises four sections, which evaluate the following skills at a lower-intermediate level: reading comprehension, writing, listening, and speaking. The examination is divided into a written component (lasting 2 hours and 20 minutes) and an oral section (lasting approximately 10-12 minutes). The CELI certification does not expire.
Capitalization System
Both the written and oral parts of the exam can be capitalized: if the candidate does not achieve a sufficient overall score in one of the two parts, they have the option to retain the successfully completed partial component for a period of one year. Therefore, they have the next three exam sessions available to retake the insufficient part.

This comprehensive 3-month program covers all the grammar you’ll need to master and includes weekly assignments, as well as in-class exercises, and practice tests. Each section of the CELI 2 exam will be thoroughly analyzed, explained step by step, practiced, and evaluated during class sessions. You will gradually acquire the skills to approach each part of the exam, develop effective time management techniques, and learn essential strategies for success.
To get you started, we offer a complimentary pre-registration consultation via Zoom, where we assess your current proficiency level in Italian and provide advice as needed. Feel free to reach out with any questions you may have before enrolling in our course.
During this 12-week course, we will offer you a range of activities and exercises, enabling you to practice at home and revisit the material from each session.
As part of this preparation course, we also provide a complimentary final simulation of the entire exam. This mock test gives you the opportunity to rehearse for the upcoming big day.
